Our vision for Galway and the west of Ireland, is a world class comprehensive institute for cancer research, diagnosis and treatment that combines basic science, clinical research, and patient care.
The Galway Cancer Initiative is a cooperative cancer programme between academic institutions, health care professionals, and industry. This programme will harness the combined expertise at the National University of Ireland, Galway and the Western Area Regional Hospitals, led by University College Hospital Galway (UCHG) to develop an integrated and interdisciplinary cancer research initiative, encompassing basic, translational and clinical research.
Over the last number of years, NUI Galway and UCHG have built a strong foundation for this initiative through strategic recruitment of internationally recognised basic and translational cancer researchers and clinicians, who will provide the relevant expertise and leadership to develop a world-class cancer research and care programme. NUI Galway’s research programme is focused on the development of novel anti-cancer agents through translational molecular medicine. University College Hospital Galway, is the major academic-medical centre in the west of Ireland, and is now one of the very few hospitals in the country with the capability of providing a full comprehensive cancer service (medical, surgical and radiation oncology) on a single site.
Among the major research programmes at the National Centre Biomedical Engineering Science (NCBES), multidisciplinary research clusters are working to understand the underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms responsible for the initiation and progression of cancer, and to develop new and better cancer therapies. The Centre also has a strong translational and clinical research programme with the objective of translating our research discoveries into improved patient care.
